Media workers in Serbia issued an urgent appeal on Friday to halt public funding for media outlets that break the law, calling for an end to the “further spread of falsehoods and hate speech.” “We, as media professionals, appeal for an immediate end to the ongoing abuse of public and state funds, public resources, and the public airwaves to spread falsehoods, toxic rhetoric, and hate speech. We demand a halt to the practice of polluting the public sphere through violations of the Law on Public Information, the journalistic Code of Ethics, and the Constitution of Serbia,” the statement read. They said that the abuse of the media landscape and the violation of all ethical standards are among the primary factors that led to Serbia’s current situation. They also expressed their expectation that the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) will immediately revoke the broadcasting license of Informer TV.
