US professor says Serbian students deserve Nobel Peace Prize

Edward P. Joseph, a conflict expert and lecturer at the Johns Hopkins University in the United States, says Serbian students deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for demonstrating that fundamental change can be achieved through nonviolent action. In an analysis published by Foreign Policy magazine, Joseph praised the students' discipline, organization and restraint during two years of pressure. He said their nationwide outreach, collective decision-making and decision to participate in elections helped build broad public support. Joseph also argued that the students recognized the need to involve experienced, respected people in public office rather than relying solely on their own ranks. He called on the United States and European Union to strengthen political, economic and people-to-people ties with Serbia and its neighbors in the former Yugoslavia.
